Aggregates for Edmonton Landscaping, Drainage and Base Work
Aggregate is the working material behind most landscape projects. It can form a driveway base, carry a pathway, let water move through a drainage detail, provide traction, or finish a visible bed. The important distinction is that those jobs do not all call for the same stone. A compactable material needs fines and a range of particle sizes so it can lock together. A drainage material needs open spaces between cleaner stone. A decorative surface is chosen for appearance and how it feels underfoot.
Start with the job, then choose the material
For a driveway, parking pad, shed base or hardscape base, select a product intended to compact. For drainage around a retaining wall, weeping-tile system or other specified feature, select the clear or washed stone called for by the design. For a path or a visible landscape finish, compare stone shape, size, colour, edging and maintenance. Choosing one aggregate simply because it is available or inexpensive can create extra work later if it is not suited to the application.
Plan for Edmonton-area weather and site conditions
Water management matters in this climate. A project that holds water, has poor base preparation or does not account for changing soil conditions can move over time. Grade, drainage, base depth and compaction should be planned before the finishing material is delivered. That is especially important where vehicles, retaining walls, foundations or hardscape are involved.
Order the layers separately
Most successful projects use more than one material. A gravel driveway may need a compacted structural layer and a separate finish. A rock bed may need edging and, where appropriate, a separation detail. A retaining-wall drainage zone is different again. Work from the bottom up and estimate each layer separately rather than hoping one product will do every job.
For Contractors
Keep base, drainage and finish stone as separate lines in the takeoff. Verify the aggregate against the drawings, manufacturer instructions or engineer’s specification before ordering. Give the yard the required volume, site access and placement location when booking delivery to Edmonton. Devonian can help match the order to the current product listing, but structural, drainage and compaction requirements belong to the project design.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between aggregate and decorative rock?
Aggregate is the broader material category. It includes products for base, drainage, surfacing and some decorative uses. Decorative rock is generally selected first for the visible finished look of a landscape bed or feature.
Can one aggregate be used for both compaction and drainage?
Usually not. Compactable products use fine material to bind together; drainage stone is selected to leave voids for water to move through. Check the project requirement before ordering.
How much aggregate should I order?
Measure the area and planned depth, then use the material calculator for an estimate. Material type, compaction, grade and site shape can affect the final quantity. Call or text the yard with your dimensions if you would like help reviewing the order.
